Quick Guide: Building Effective Merchandising Collections & Virtual Categories

Why create Collections?

In the competitive world of retail merchandising and fashion, creating an engaging and immersive shopping experience is key to driving click throughs, higher conversions and average order values. Fredhopper empowers e-commerce merchandisers to craft dynamic and personalized product groupings through Collections and Virtual Categories. These tools not only enhance the visual appeal of your site but also strategically showcase products to align with your brand's vision and customer preferences.

Why create Collections?

Collections are akin to visual merchandising, serving as powerful tools to communicate your brand strategy and values. These curated lists of products, which can be selected by your expert team, can create an inspirational shopping experience. Represented as landing pages, Collections regroup products by attribute rules or handpicked selections, and you can enhance them with marketing content such as banners to create a captivating and atmospheric presentation.

Today we explore a few common approaches of curating collections simply with Fredhopper.

Rule-Based Collections

Creating rule-based Collections with Fredhopper is straightforward and flexible using any product attribute.

For example, its simple to create a new campaign and associated collection for summertime from the women category. This collection could feature dresses and skirts in vibrant colours such as green, orange, and yellow.

However, in addition to just selecting the right products for the collection, it's important to apply a merchandising strategy to align with your business objective. In this example we use a strategy to drive higher conversion on this campaign collection.

To do this we can leverage the Fredhopper patented ranking cocktail capability allowing you to apply, blend, and weight any data point such as price, clicks, margin, and stock inventory.

By leveraging collections, the shopper has a more engaging visual shopping experience, for merchandising teams they can execute on merchandising strategies based on their objectives and KPIs.

A win win for everybody.

Handpicked Collections

Alternatively or as a mix to rule based collections is possible to handpick collections if you have a very specific vision or brand story to curate. This is common with our luxury and fashion customers when launching a new collection or collaboration.

With Fredhopper you can paste a list of product ID’s or use the visual editor to manually choose and move products to achieve your curated collection.

In addition, we offer added flexibility of sorting products by your selected order or by any attribute or ranking strategy.
