Controversial Topic, This SaaS Thing!

12/18/2006 11:28:05 AM

I recently did an interview with Phil Waineright of ZDNet.  The topic of the interview was "10 Myths in SaaS".  His title for the article was "IT is Afraid of SaaS".  Ouch!  It created a pretty strong reaction, as you can imagine.

There was so much reaction that Phil wrote a follow-up article, summarizing and responding to all of the commentary.  He called it, "A Feeding Frenzy for SaaS Detractors":

One of the contributors he quoted was...me.  So many folks were taking a poke, I felt it was a good idea to respond.  Here is part of my post:

"Many of CrownPeak's clients are working with a SaaS for the first time. They had to believe in this model and our company before they would buy from us. Happily, today we have a large and diverse customer base, and the amount of faith it takes to believe in an SaaS versus the amount of faith it takes to believe in a custom development project is starting to even out. Soon, we believe, the question will be, 'how can we justify taking on a complex IT project when we can simply flip a switch with SaaS - at lower cost?"

From this, I draw a few conclusions.  First, there is still a lot of doubt about SaaS.  Second, there is still a lot of misunderstanding about how the model works - most of the detractors were folks objecting because they felt they couldn't customize the software.  Depends on the SaaS vendor, doesn't it?  And third (duh), blogs are powerful.  ZDNet got about 20 pages of new content from one article, plus a bunch of people linking into the debate and coming back to see how folks had responded.  This is powerful stuff for a publisher.
